“Couldn’t Tell If I Tried” (2021) dir. Torian Love

Edit by Lauren Jevnikar

Couldn’t Tell If I Tried is a four-channel video installation by Torian Love. The film explores expression and emotion from various forms of Black vocalism and spirituality (specifically gospel music)— and how it has influenced both popular Black music and Love’s emotional life.

The project is comprised of archival footage of gospel performance, family archival material, as well as video/photographic performance work from Love. Through this, spirituality is explored outside of the context of religion, and their parallels through Love’s experiences with her chosen & biological family.
